HOUSTON – Despite not having his best pitch, Wade Miley found a way to get another win on a night on which he got a boost by a huge offensive effort by the Houston Astros.
Miley pitched six strong innings and the Astros backed him up with a season-high six homers to rout the Seattle Mariners 10-2 Friday.
“He had to pitch so differently tonight than he normally does,” Houston manager AJ Hinch said. “He didn’t have his cutter at all so he was pitching with one weapon down and really his best weapon … because he didn’t have a feel for it. A good night on a night where he didn’t pitch like himself and didn’t use his stuff like he normally does.”
Miley (10-4) allowed three hits and two runs to win his third straight decision.
Yordan Alvarez, Jake Marisnick, Martin Maldonado and Jose Altuve all connected off Mariners starter Yusei Kikuchi (4-8) to leave him tied with Justin Verlander for most home runs allowed in the majors this season at 28.
Carlos Correa and Aledmys Diaz also homered for Houston, which improved to 10-1 against Seattle this season.
The four home runs Kikuchi gave up were a season high and he allowed nine hits for the second time in three starts to lose his third consecutive decision and give the Astros three starters with 10 or more wins this season.
“I think I tossed some good balls and was able to work the count, but I couldn’t finish it off and that resulted in home run,” said Kikuchi, who has made 23 starts this season. I feel like they connected well off where I was aiming.”
Seattle manager Scott Servais said, “He had a hard time getting the swing and miss. They weren’t really biting on the slider tonight. They were on the fastball.”
White Sox 4, Phillies 3 (15)
In Philadelphia, Jose Abreu hit an RBI single off outfielder Roman Quinn in the 15th and Chicago outlasted the hosts.
Phillies pitcher Vince Velasquez, playing left field, threw out the potential go-ahead run in the 14th with Quinn (0-1) on the mound. He nearly did it again in the 15th but Leury Garcia barely beat the throw.
Josh Osich (1-0) tossed two innings for the win and the White Sox used nine pitchers to snap a four-game losing streak.
Indians 7, Angels 3
In Cleveland, Yasiel Puig drove in his first two runs for the Indians and Mike Clevinger won his fifth straight by beating Los Angeles.
Angels DH Shohei Ohtani was hitless in three at-bats.
Padres 5, Dodgers 2
In Los Angeles, left-hander Eric Lauer spoiled the major league debut of Dodgers prospect Dustin May with six strong innings, pitching San Diego to victory.
The highly regarded May (0-1) was pulled after 5⅔ innings, charged with four runs (three earned) on nine hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Cubs 6, Brewers 2
In Chicago, Javier Baez homered and drove in three runs as the Cubs dealt Milwaukee its fourth loss in five games.
The Brewers’ Christian Yelich went 0-for-4, ending his career-best 19-game hitting streak.
Yankees 4, Red Sox 2
In New York, Gleyber Torres hit a first-inning grand slam, left-hander James Paxton cruised after that and the Yankees topped Boston.
