Shohei Ohtani’s four RBIs power Angels past Blue Jays

Shohei Ohtani had a three-run double and a solo home run, Andrew Heaney threw six scoreless innings and the visiting Los Angeles Angels defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7-1 Friday night at Dunedin, Florida.

Jared Walsh added a two-run homer for the Angels, who have won the first two games of the four-game series. The Blue Jays lost their fourth game in a row.

Heaney (1-1) gave up three hits and two walks while striking out nine.

David Phelps allowed only a walk in the first inning as Toronto’s opener.

T.J. Zeuch (0-1) took over in the second and allowed four unearned runs in that frame. Walsh led off with an infield single and Max Stassi had a two-out infield hit. Dexter Fowler walked to load the bases.

Shortstop Bo Bichette bobbled David Fletcher’s grounder and his throw to second was late as a run scored. Fowler, who went into the bag standing up, crumpled to the ground in pain with a contusion of the left leg. He was able to make his way to a cart that removed him from the field. Jose Rojas ran for Fowler.

Ohtani’s double cleared the bases.

Ohtani led off the fifth with his third home run of the season. The next batter, Mike Trout, doubled, and he scored when Walsh hit his third homer of the year with one outs ending Zeuch’s outing.

Zeuch yielded seven runs (three earned), six hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. He fanned two.

Heaney retired 12 in a row before Marcus Semien’s single led off the bottom of the sixth. Vladimir Gurriel Jr. also singled in the sixth, but Heaney escaped the threat.

Alex Claudio replaced Heaney in the seventh and went 1 1/3 innings, allowing Semien’s infield single and Randal Grichuk’s double before being replaced by Chris Rodriguez in the eighth. A wild pitch scored a run.

Toronto left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (COVID-19 vaccine reaction) left the game after the second inning.

The Blue Jays started the game without outfielder Teoscar Hernandez (COVID-19 protocols), left-hander Ryan Borucki (vaccine side effects) and right-hander Tyler Chatwood (right triceps inflammation). Outfielder Josh Palacios and right-handers Joel Payamps and Ty Tice were recalled from the alternate training site.
